1924 Winter Olympic Games
Chamonix, France
The first Winter Olympics was actually called the "International Winter Sports Week" after Scandinavian countries complained that it would detract from their Nordic Games. Two years after the event it was accorded Olympic status. Skating and ice hockey had been held as part of the summer Games in 1908 and 1920.
A total of 17 nations attended, although Estonia only sent officials, with 281 men and 13 women competing.
