1984 Winter Olympic Games

Sarajevo, Yugoslavia
The 14th Winter Olympics was the first to be held in Eastern Europe. East Germany came top of the medals table for the only time in its history at either the Summer or Winter Olympics. For the first time in excess of 40 nations took part in a Winter Games (49), with the female competitor total (276) also setting a new mark. However, despite an increase in male participants on the previous Games in Lake Placid (1002), the overall tally of 1278 fell short by 15 of the figure set in Grenoble in 1968.
