Tennis - Men's Australian Open
Held each year in January in Melbourne, the Australian Open is the first of the year's Grand Slam tournaments. It is followed by the French Open in Paris (May-June), Wimbledon's All England Championships in London (June-July) and finally the US Open in New York (September).
From its inception in 1905 through to 1987 is was, like Wimbledon, contested on grass courts until adopting a hard surface similar to that found at the US Open in 1988 at the new Flinders Park complex. Up to 1926 it was called the Australasian Championship, becoming the Australian Championship in 1927 and finally adopting Australian Open in 1969. The winner claims a replica of the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup.
