Football - FIFA Confederations Cup
FIFA decided to create a tournament to whet the appetite before World Cups, involving the respective continental champions. This developed into a dress rehearsal for the "real thing", with prospective World Cup hosts using the event to test logistics and stadia. The final such tournament was staged in 2017.
