Football - English League Cup
The League Cup was the brainchild of former Football League secretary Alan Hardaker, who wanted an extra competition to benefit some of the lesser lights among the organisation's 92 clubs.
Initially the big clubs didn't treat the competition as seriously as its FA cousin, with the final not given the glitz of being held at Wembley, but during the 1970s the League Cup final took on its own kind of prestige, earning the sobriquet of the "People's Final`.
The winner of the tournament earns a place in the following season's Europa League, unless they have qualified for the UEFA Champions League, in which case the position goes to the club that finished sixth in the FA Premier League.
