Olympic Games - Rowing
Men's Rowing has been part of the Olympics since 1900, having been cancelled four years earlier due to bad weather. Since 1912 all men's races have been contested at the distance of 2000 metres. Previously various distances were employed. Women's events were introduced in 1976, initially over 1000m before being lengthened to 2000m from 1988. "Lightweight" competitions first appeared in 1996. A nation can only enter one boat per discipline. Currently there are 14 on the programme, incorporating scullling (two oars per person) and coxless events (single oar per rower).
The venue used in 2008 was Shunyi Park, Beijing, China
