Golf - Solheim Cup
The female equivalent of the Ryder Cup. Like its male counterpart, the Solheim Cup is a biennial event between the United States and Europe which was the brainchild of golf club manufacturer Karsten Solheim.
Initially it was contested in even numbered years but the fall-out from the cancellation of the 2001 Ryder Cup caused the Solheim to move to odd years from 2003 to 2023, before revertting back to even years.
Founded in 1990, the format has progressed from 16, 18 and 20 matches through to the current Ryder Cup-style schedule of 28. This incorporates eight Foursomes, eight Fourballs and 12 Singles.
