Cricket - South Africa First Class Championship

The domestic first-class competition of South Africa began in 1989/90 as the Currie Cup, donated and named after a Scotsman - Sir Donald Currie.
Initially only two teams contested the prize - Kimberley and Transvaal. In 1891/92 Western Province, Natal, Eastern Province, Border and Orange Free State joined the fray. Kimberley became Griqualand West in 1892/93.
After several seasons of experimenting with various formats, a round-robin league was esatablished in 1906/07. Rhodesia took part occasionally, but the next permanent member was North East Transvaal in 1938/39. The competition continued to be staged haphazardly.
When real political change happened with the ending of apartheid, most of the teams changed names but an even bigger change occurred in 2004/05 when the entire structure of cricket in South Africa was transformed, with many of the old neighbouring major provincial teams being combined.
Now six teams contest the title: Western Province (Western Provice and Boland, formerly Cape Cobras), Knights (Griquas and Free State), Warriors (Eastern Provice and Border), Lions (North West and Gauteng), Titans (Northerns and Easterns) and Dolphins (Natal).
