Rugby - French Top 14
The French club championship was first held in 1892. From that year through to 1898 it purely involved Parisian sides, with the rest of the country joining in 1899. Currently it is contested by the leading 14 clubs in the country (the Top 14), who play in a home and away league from August to May, with the leading six teams qualifying for both the following season's Champions Cup and the end of season play-offs. The top two in the table go through to the semi-finals, each played on a neutral ground, with the remainder involved in "Barrages" play-offs for the right to join them. The winner of the final, held at Stade de France in Paris, claims the Bouclier de Bennus shield.
