UEFA Super Cup
A competition with a chequered history, on occasions not played due to fixture congestion. It began as a match between the winners of the European Cup and European Cup Winners' Cup, developing into a contest between the former and the UEFA Cup winners when the Cup Winners'Cup was disbanded. After the Europa League replaced the UEFA Cup, the holders of that title have taken on the reigning European champions, and the match has found a permanent place in the season each August.
