Tennis - Women's Roland-Garros
Tournoi de Roland-Garros (commonly known as the French Open), is renowned as the world's premier clay court tournament. It is the only one of the four Grand Slam events to be contested on the distinctive red, slow surface. It is traditionally held at the Roland-Garros complex in Paris (named after a World War I pilot) for two weeks at the end of May and beginning of June, preceeded by the Australian Open in Melbourne (January) and succeeded by Wimbledon's All England Championships in London (June-July) and the US Open at Flushing Meadows, New York (September). From the Women's Singles tournament inception in 1912 through to 1924, the event was only open to players who were members of tennis clubs in France, before 1925 saw the expansion to include the cream of world tennis and for three years the championships were held on grass courts. In 1928, the opening of Roland-Garros produced the change back to clay.
