Rugby - Women's World Cup
The women's version of the World Cup began four years after the men's. The first two events were not sanctioned by the International Rugby Board. Whereas the men took well over a century to organise a world tournament, the female of the species came up with a World Cup (although not officially sanctioned) in 1991, just nine years after the Netherlands and France contested the first-ever women's international match.
