The forerunner of the modern tournament began in 1881, making it the third oldest event in the sport behind Wimbledon and the US Open.
In 1990, as the Canadian Open, it was accepted as one of the ATP's new Masters Series championships. The event alternates between Toronto and Montreal,, played on hard courts.
