Golf - Ryder Cup
The most famous team competition in golf owes its name to a seed merchant from St Albans, England. There had been discussions for many years about creating a match between the leading professionals from the United States and Great Britain, but it was Samuel Ryder who instigated the first official event by providing the trophy.
The Ryder Cup is held biennially, and is now contested by the USA and Europe with the venue alternating. Teams of 12 players each compete in matchplay. On each of the first two days there are four ties each in the fourball (two man teams with each player playing his own ball) and foursomes (one ball for each team, players play alternate shots). While on the final day there are 12 Singles matches. To win, a team must claim 14.5 points (one point for a victory and half a point for a drawn match). If the match finished 14-14, the current holder retains the trophy. The 2020 edition was staged a year later after being postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
