Snooker - World Matchplay
The World Matchplay was born as an alternative to the World Championship in 1952, when leading playewrs were in dispute with the governing body. From 1952-57 it was effectively the World Championship and so the winners are reflected on that page - click here. The title was revived on one occasion in 1976 before a televised elite event was held from 1988 to 1992.
