  1. Champion stayer Stradivarius strode once again into history as he became the first horse to win the Goodwood Cup four times after a thrilling race on the English Sussex Downs.

Jockey Frankie Dettori guided the John Gosden-trained six-year-old at the picturesque course, with a stunning turn of foot in the final stages, coming from fifth to the front. It was Dettori's fifth win in the race, two of them on Stradivarius, matching the record held by five other jockeys in the race's 212-year history. No other horse has won the prize since it became a Group 1 event in 2017.

Last month Dettori, Gosden and Stradivarius won the Gold Cup at Ascot for the third consecutive year, equalling the record number of wins in that great race.

  2. England fought back from 1-0 down to win the series against West Indies 2-1 with a pair of victories in Manchester behind closed doors due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Pace bowler Stuart Broad became just the seventh player in the sport's history to take 500 wickets in a Test career, as he claimed 10 victims in the final Test match at Old Trafford, won by the hosts by 269 runs.

This was the last series contested for the Wisden Trophy, which will now be retired to the museum at Lord's Cricket Ground in London. From now on a new prize will be up for grabs, the Richards-Botham Trophy, in Test series between England and West Indies.
